Summer Term 2025
Welcome back Wrens, we are so excited to share more adventures, hopefully with some sunny weather!
Our Christian values for this term are Endurance ,Creation ,Wisdom,Justice.
Endurance for our Wrens means persevering through difficulties with the help of God's love and strength. It's about not giving up when things get tough, trusting that God will be with them. Endurance also involves patience and faith, knowing that God's love and faithfulness will endure forever.
Our class novel for this term will be chosen by our Wrens from the 'Books to read in KS1 list' through a class vote after reading the blurb on our recommendations .
English
As writers, we will use 'Toys In Space' by Mini Grey to write a fantasy story about some toys who are taken onto a spaceship, then write a new version of the story 'Goldilocks and the Just One Bear' by Leigh Hodgkinson with a new character or new setting
Our daily routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential and we would ask that you read regularly at home with your child to develop a love of reading.Set aside a specific time for reading every day and make reading a priority. Try not to do the reading when you are both tired! Walk through the book first and discuss the pictures and the important words. Always remember to keep reading aloud to your child even when they can read independently.
Our Wrens will continue to access phonics ,using our Twinkl phonics scheme.By the end of Year 1, children should be able to:
- Say the sound for any grapheme they are shown
- Write the common graphemes for any given sound (e.g. ‘e,’ ‘ee,’ ‘ie,’ ‘ea’)
- Use their phonics knowledge to read and spell unfamiliar words of up to three syllables.
- Read all of the 100 high frequency words, and be able to spell most of them
- Form letters correctly
At the end of Year 1, all children are given a Phonics Screening Check to ensure they have mastered the appropriate knowledge.
Level 6 takes place throughout Year 2, with the aim of children becoming fluent readers and accurate spellers.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our english lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules ,as well as the Y1/2 common exception words
Maths.
As mathematicians, we follow the White Rose planning. Through the summer term we will work on fractions, time, statistics and position and direction. The children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
Science
As scientists we will be invesigating living things and their habitats and our Wrens will learn to: identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other ,identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats and describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food. We will use the work of our focus scientist, the naturalist David Attenborough, to help us answer: Why is an animal or plant suited to its environment? What do different animals eat? What is a habitat? What is the weather like in different habitats?
Topic
As historians and geographers we will be looking at transport pioneers in the 20th century, starting with the Titanic and the Wright brothers asking 'What can we learn from the Titanic and Wright Brothers?' We will look at ,'How did they stop a disaster like the Titanic happening again? and 'How did flight change as a result of the Wright brothers’ work? We will end by looking at Amy Johnson,Maggie Gee and Bessie Colman.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning and look at The Bible. Why is the Bible such a special book? Do people of all world faiths have holy books? Then : How is the place where Jesus lived different from how we live now? We will also look at Judaism as part of world religions.
Our whole school and class roundabout worships alongside our class reflection areas and partnerships with our local churches allow the children opportunities to explore our Christian values and develop their own thoughts, reflections and spirituality.
PE
In PE we will look at athletics, developing our skills, agility and coordination, helping to build our confidence and competence and thinking about what makes a good team. We will continue our weekly yoga sessions to help with our mindfulness and regulation and will take part in our whole school Sports Day.
