"Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become
children of light.”
Ready;Respectful;Resilient
Welcome to Reception,we are the Wrens.
“Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to
interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not
an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child having
opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.”
Our staff
Mrs Gibson and Mrs Raynor are our class teachers. Mrs Sherlock and Mrs Hudson will be supporting our learning
Below is some useful information relating to our year together in Wrens and your child's learning. However, if you have any queries or questions please don't hesitate to contact us. We love to see our Wrens' WOW moments from outside of school so please do email and share any proud achievments!

We understand that your child is precious and a gift from God and that leaving them in our care can be a little upsetting, particularly at the start of the year.
Rest assured that we will love, cherish and care for your child each and everyday. Try to encourage your child to grow in their independence as the term develops and encourage them to enter school without parental support. Staff will be available every morning from 8:45 am to discuss any news for the day.
'We love because God first loved us.'
1 John 4:19
Our classroom is unique - just like us. And we have the most amazing outdoor learning environment to explore the world around us. We treat all of our Wrens as individuals, your child's needs are planned for and supported to allow each child to achieve their full potential. As reception there is opportunities for both adult directed teaching and child led learning. This will enable the children to place themselves at the centre of their own learning.
We love learning outside, exploring our wonderful woodlands and local environment; inventing in the mud kitchen, water, sand and playhouse; developing our physical skills riding bikes, climbing on the adventure playground, and playing with PE equipment. We love the large construction. Dressing up and performing with instruments is great fun! Our quiet learning area enables us to develop small world skills whilst getting plenty of fresh air.
Inside, we enjoy our creative table and office, playdoh, construction activities, investigation area, small world, fine motor activities, phonics area and number area. We like quiet time in our reading corner and reflection area. We also love listening to stories, singing songs and playing with our friends.
We have daily phonics and numeracy small group sessions in which we learn to read, write, count and develop maths skills which we can then apply during our play.
AutumnTerm 2024
During the autumn term we will make the most of our beautiful outside areas as we investigate habitats, woodland and hibernation and explore the natural world. We will use our enquiry led question 'What we know about me?' to lead our learning exploring our emotions, our friends and our school. Our class text 'The Gingerbread Man' starts off our familiarity with traditional tales. Later on in the term we will explore 'How do we know it is autumn?' looking at the festival of Diwali and people in our community with our focus text being 'I'm going to eat this Ant' by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros
The autumn term is full of whole school events and our Wrens will take part in our Harvest service,Christmas performance,Nativity service and Forest school sessions as well as sharing learning with our friends from feeder nurseries, and visits in our local area.
Phonics and reading
As Wrens, we are starting to learn the different phonemes and graphemes we use to read and spell words (level 2 and 3). We will have discrete phonics sessions at least once a day for all children. We follow Twinkl Phonics which include interactive whiteboard work, tasks, letter formation, games and reading books.
Maths
The first few years of a child’s life are especially important for mathematics development,as practitioners we need to ensure that all children develop firm mathematical foundations in a way that is engaging, and appropriate for their age. There are six key areas of early mathematics learning, which collectively provide a platform for everything children will encounter as they progress through their maths learning at primary school, and beyond:cardinality and counting, comparison, composition, pattern, shape and space and measures. At Kingsley St John's we use NCTEM and White Rose materials to support our maths work.
